India: New Delhi air pollution at dangerous levels

Air pollution in New Delhi is a major concern as air quality reached hazardous levels this week. On Tuesday, India’s environmental watchdog, the National Green Tribunal, fined the city $3.5 million (R48.7m) for failing to enforce rules to reduce smog.

According to the World Health Organisation, pollution levels are currently at nearly 12 times the healthy limit. Authorities are waiting for the appropriate weather conditions to induce artificial rain by cloud-seeding. Mumbai, Kolkata and Lucknow are also experiencing high pollution.
