Earthquake has struck the Indonesian tourist island Lombok

6 August 2018

A strong earthquake has struck the Indonesian tourist island Lombok, and shaken neighbouring Bali. More than 90 people have been killed, mostly by collapsing buildings. Thousands of homes have been destroyed. So far, no tourists are known to have died in the quake, but about 1000 have been evacuated from Gili Island, northwest of Lombok Island. A tsunami alert has been lifted. Lombok and Bali airports continue to function, despite some damage.

A smaller earthquake occurred in Lombok last week, killing 17 people.
